Today we were supposed to have a quiz, but someone in the class said a very wise quote coming from Mr. Maksymchuk saying "I will not make you write a test if you have not got the last test you wrote, corrected and handed back." So he faced a little pickle and decided that who ever doesn't want to write the quiz doesn't have to and the people who wish to write are doing that right now.
This link is a website about wireless laptops in class. Professors are finding that their students grades are falling because of the distractions they have while in class.

My opinion on having lap tops in class is I think we should be able to have them. The only problem is, people are taking advantage of them and using them while our teachers are teaching. Facebook, hotmail, my space, and ebay are 4 kinds of websites that people are interested in. I don't have a problem with any of them but when students start going on them in class it distracts them completely. I don't believe that anyone can go on facebook and be learning at the same time. I use hotmail in this school to send work from home to here, I don't want to have it banned just because some people aren't using them for work use. There is no need for people to be on facebook in class, if you want to be on it then leave because your not doing any good for the teacher by using it. So to any one who likes to surf the net while the teacher is lecturing, remember that the more you use it the more likely it will get banned. For example cell phones are going to be completely banned because people can't seem to not use it for the day.
p.s whatever you say on the interenet stays there forever!

Pauline,
Really brave of you to take on a hot topic like this one. As the teacher, it frustrates me like crazy that people aren't paying attention to what I'm teaching, and then ask me 10 minutes later, "What are we doing?". On the other hand, maybe it's my fault for not having enough classroom management skills to make sure that people are doing what they're supposed in my class...At any rate, I'm interested in continuing the conversation, and especially involving your classmates. Overall, I've got to say that if I were a student, I'd prefer having a computer in a lecture environment to not having one...At least it would be my choice to do/not do what I'm supposed to...
What about younger grades in high school? Say, grade 9 or 10? Any thoughts? Is there a minimum grade that we should introduce laptop computers in?

In my opinion I think that it is your responsibility as a student to be paying attention to what is being taught in class. If a student is doing something else while they are supposed to be listening and don’t understand what is going on later on in the class then that is their problem to deal with. In high school teachers are always talking about preparing us for Post Secondary Education and in college or university there is not going to be anyone there to hold your hand and baby-sit you to make sure you are staying on task. You need to teach yourself to focus if you want to succeed in your classes, and it's your choice whether you want to pay attention or be distracted. I don’t think laptops should be banned in classrooms because I think it is beneficial if it is used in the right way. As for an age limit I think no matter what grade you introduce computers to you are going to have the same result. There are always going to be students that choose to go on websites rather than listen to the teaching going on in class.
I agree with Mr. Maks. Students do choose to do what they want in class, but how is it fair to the teacher when students ask how to do something because they were busy surfing the net?
Teachers are supposed to teach the students, but you can't teach someone who doesn't listen. Students deal with their problems by asking the teacher, who already spent the hour and a half teaching.
Most students in this class are 17+ and by now should know how to use their time wisely. I think its the students choice to have the internet open infront of them and to use it to their advantage. Its their choice whether or not they want to learn.
