Sequences and Series

Sequences and Series

In October, an oil well in Alberta produced 80m³ of oil. Each month, the well produces 3.1% less oil than the previous month.

a) In total, how much oil will be produced during a 6-month period beginning October 1st.

Method #1 (home screen method)
· Add all 6 months = 444.31m³

b)Once the well production drops below 60m³ per month, it is not profitable to operate the well. In which month will it no longer be profitable to operate the well?

Continue pressing enter to get the following numbers:

a) Method #2 – Sequence Mode on the Calculator
Mode - seq – Y=
2nd 7 = funny looking u
(n-1) press X,T,θ,n to get italicized n
*“The u(n) term in the sequence is dependent on the u(n-1) term”

Window Change settings depending on question.
Ymax- is greater than 80 because 80 is the most oil we are going to have.
Graph Line graph is shown, trace trace to find the number you want. In this question we want to go 10.

b)Gather numbers together and add them together to find b.

Method #3- Excel – make a spreadsheet

Method #4 – Shodor Websote “Sequencer interactivity

*you may use this website (as you did Ron Blond), provided you indicate all inputs.
